In mid-December,
Fake Steve Jobs, the alter ego of widely
read journalist and blogger Dan Lyons,
posted the following appeal to his fellow
members of iPhone Nation: "On Friday,
Dec. 18, at noon Pacific time, we will
attempt to overwhelm the AT&T data
network and bring it to its knees. The goal
is to have every iPhone user (or as many as
we can) turn on a data-intensive app and run
that app for one solid hour. Send the
message to AT&T that we are sick of
their substandard network. …Join us and
speak truth to power!" Soon thousands
of hooligans—or if you prefer, frustrated
customers paying AT&T (T)
as much as $150 per month—took to Twitter
and Facebook to join up.

- MBA Job Outlook
Improving
|
|
This year's
class of MBAs arrived on campus in September
expecting a challenging fall recruiting
season and now many are bracing themselves
for an even tougher spring ahead. One of
them is Aashini Shah, an MBA student looking
for a job in the entertainment industry, who
is feeling the pressure because most movie
studios and entertainment companies don't
hire until the spring. To get an edge, she's
spent every spare moment she has networking
with alumni, going on informational
interviews, and keeping in touch with the
contacts she made last summer, she says.

- Bank of America
E-Mails Show Lehman Was Buy Target
|
|
When
Bank of America Corp.’s board met to
approve the acquisition of an investment
bank on Sept. 15, 2008, members thought they
were going to buy Lehman Brothers Holdings
Inc., not Merrill Lynch & Co., according
to New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
The
bank bought Merrill after examining its
books for just 25 hours, Cuomo claimed.
Shareholders approved the deal Dec. 5, 2008.
The acquisition closed Jan. 1, 2009, after
Merrill losses had increased by billions of
dollars, a change the bank didn’t disclose
before the shareholder vote, Cuomo said.

- Wal-Mart, Target
Put Squeeze on Redbox
|
|
Wal-Mart is
boxing out Redbox. Wal-Mart (WMT),
the world's largest retailer, has imposed
strict limits on the number of DVDs any one
customer can buy at a time, making it harder
for movie-rental kiosks such as Coinstar's (CSTR)
Redbox to get their hands on large numbers
of newly released discs.

- Apple’s Jobs
Spurns Intel, Qualcomm With A4 IPad Chip
|
|
Apple
Inc.’s A4 chip, unveiled last week as part
of its iPad, shows how Chief Executive
Officer Steve Jobs is extending control over
the company’s hardware at the expense of
Qualcomm Inc. and Intel Corp.
Instead
of buying an off-the-shelf part, Jobs had
Apple’s engineers design the A4 chip,
giving them influence over its cost and
functions, said Will Strauss, an analyst at
Forward Concepts Co., a researcher in Tempe,
Arizona.

- Italy Weighs
Telecom Italia-Telefonica Deal
|
|
The Italian
government is in talks with Telecom Italia
Spa about the phone company's strategic
options, including a possible takeover by
Spain's Telefonica SA, said a person
familiar with the situation.
The
discussions, involving the Italian treasury,
are at an early stage, said the person, who
declined to be identified because the talks
are private. The future ownership of Telecom
Italia's fixed-line network, which the
government wants to keep in local hands for
national security reasons, is among the
issues under discussion, the person said.

- Airbus May Beat
Boeing in China's Aviation Market
|
|
The last thing
Boeing needs now is a new China problem.
Over the next two decades, Boeing (BA)
expects China to spend $400 billion to
purchase 3,770 planes from manufacturers,
making China second in size only to the
combined market of the U.S. and Canada. With
airlines in other markets struggling—and
Boeing still trying to recover from its
much-delayed Dreamliner 787 project—the
U.S. manufacturer could use a Chinese boost.
One sign of China's importance: Boeing, the
world's second-biggest aircraft manufacturer
behind Airbus, is now sending a sales
director to Beijing to become the company's
first China-based sales executive. Jim
Simon, former head of East Asia sales in
Seattle, will arrive in Beijing soon, says
company spokesman Yukui Wang.

- Davos: Recovery,
Uncertainty and Governance
|
|
My
initial impressions of Davos 2010 was that
the three dominant themes were recovery,
uncertainty and governance. The early focus
was on the speed and pace of recovery; the
uncertainties of when to end the fiscal
stimulus packages, the ongoing trade
imbalances and the threat of currency
revaluations combined with the urgent need
to reform the financial sector.

- U.S. Board
Blames Captain for Air Crash Near Buffalo
|
|
A
U.S. safety board blamed the captain of a
flight by Pinnacle Airlines Corp.’s Colgan
unit for causing a crash that killed 50
people last year, citing his incorrect
response to a cockpit stall warning.
Captain
Marvin Renslow, 47, pulled back on the
control column after the warning, sending
the plane’s nose up and putting the
aircraft into a stall that plunged it into a
neighborhood near Buffalo, New York, the
National Transportation Safety Board found
today in Washington.
